The Importance of Having Courageous Conversations

Beyond issues of poverty and wealth, language or family involvement, data suggests that “systemic racism” is the most devastating factor contributing to the diminished capacity of all children—especially Black, Brown and American Indian children—to learn and to achieve at the highest levels.

Rather than viewing achievement disparities through a prism of blame and shame, educators must embrace the responsibility to meet the needs of all children through adaptive leadership and development of new skills.

When school leaders effectively learn to have Courageous Conversations About Race, they can uncover, examine and address the powerful ways in which systemic racism impacts student engagement and achievement. Our belief in the educability of ALL students will transform educators’ behaviors, which, in turn, will foster improved student achievement results.
